On Tools
If buying equipment you’ll never use again hiring is a better option, especially if you schedule the job to involve half-day hire. Borrowing from a friend is even cheaper.

On Materials
Buy direct from the manufacturer or insist on a trade discount. Search for secondhand and reused materials at demolition yards.

On Labour
Effective project management of your own time is important so plan the sequence and budget for each job before you start. Organise a working bee with friends then return the favour.

On Time
Employ professionals that have skills, tools or access to materials that you can’t get. Educate yourself by attending workshops at hardware stores, researching online and speaking to experts. Your spare time is also valuable but if you can complete a job quicker than waiting for a tradie to turn up then go for it.
