1. If you buy a car through a dealer, get them to register it, and try to have it included in the price. Most dealerships do this automatically, but check first to make sure that the quote includes this service.

2. If you need to change your car in a hurry, don’t order a new one a few weeks before going on holiday (in case an unexpected fault needs urgent attention), and don’t opt for a model that has only just been released, in case there are any new-model teething problems.

3. If you have a car primarily for business use, save time maintaining it by taking a long-term lease or rental option instead of buying.

4. Servicing can be included in rental and lease vehicles, and you don’t have to organise insurance yourself. If there’s a problem you receive a replacement car, and at the end of the contract term you get a new car as a replacement or the option of buying the old one at a reduced price.

5. Think about car sharing. A few programs operate in Australia’s bigger cities, where, as a member, you use a car that’s parked locally for as long as you need it.
