Timesaving aids for carers

Caring for an aged relative or spouse can easily turn into a full-time job, so streamline your input and encourage a safe level of independence.

Invest in a few ‘extras’. Special aids such as a bedside commode chair, a walking frame, a device for opening tightly sealed jars, hand rails in the bathroom, a fixed chair or bench in the shower recess and an overhead bed trapeze all save time and the amount of effort required to help.

If a higher level of assistance is required, ask your GP to help arrange for the relevant professional to visit your home, to suggest the most useful aids. Part of this aim is to ensure you don’t save time by cutting corners, ending up with a serious injury from lifting an aged relative.
