Sleep and lose weight this season!
That’s right. The bedroom may be the best place to shed kilos this holiday season. And we don’t mean hanging from the chandelier doing … well… you know… pull-ups.
We mean sleeping. That’s right. A good old set of zzzz’s may be the best way to keep your weight down during the holidays. An amazing study of 68,000 women conducted at Harvard Medical School reveals that women who sleep five hours a night are 32 percent more likely to gain 14 kilos or more as they get older than women who sleep seven hours or more.
Even when the women who slept longer ate more they still gained less than the women who slept less!
• Exactly how lack of sleep affects our ability to lose weight is not clear – but it may be that people who are a bit sleep deprived don’t metabolise the calories as efficiently as those who are better rested.
• With mile-long holiday to-do lists, it’s easy to skimp on sleep in lieu of the gift-wrap, cookie baking or Christmas card marathon. Keep in mind though, it won’t leave you with a skimpy waistline.
