Most of the kilojoules you consume — about 60–65 per cent — go towards keeping your heart beating, maintaining your body temperature and performing other essential bodily functions. To find out how many kilojoules your body needs to fuel these tasks, calculate your basal metabolic rate (BMR).

Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Multiply your weight in kilograms by 0.9 (men should skip this step).
Multiply the result by 24.
Multiply again by 4.18.

That’s how many kilojoules you need a day without allowing for physical activity and exercise. If you add these in, you’ll need 30–50 per cent more kilojoules. But if you’re not active and are taking in more kilojoules than your BMR, you’re probably putting on weight. Boosting your lean muscle mass through strength training can increase your BMR so you burn kilojoules faster, even at rest.
