Install a timber benchtop
Take a weekend to customise a prepared workbench from a kitchen range and add a new sink with tapware
For a warm, sophisticated finish in a small kitchen, replace a laminate benchtop with solid timber. Keep the existing cabinets, doors and drawers for simple DIY.
The revamp takes about two days, call in a tradesman for the plumbing.
Have the pipes disconnected before removing the old bench and sink then install the new one over the existing cabinets with a new sink and mixer.
BUY THE BENCHTOP in finished laminated panels from a kitchen range such as IKEA Numerar oak worktop.
Buy enough for the bench and an end panel that positions vertically to cover the dishwasher or cabinets.
TIP - The benches are joined with dowels, panel joiners and angle brackets. Removing the old benchtop If there’s a splashback behind the benchtop use a utility knife to cut through the silicone seal.
Under the bench, remove the screws securing it to the cabinet rails, removing any brackets then lifting it free with the sink attached.
REMOVE GRANITE OR STONE using a pry bar, wedging it under the bench to crack the adhesive and pry it free.
Making the sink cutout
For this kitchen makeover there are three bench parts.
MAIN BENCHTOP has the sink cutout.
SIDE BENCHTOP joins the main bench at right angles with the factory edge at the end.
END PANEL is positioned on the floor to cover the end of the cabinets.
To cut the benches to fit use a tablesaw or a circular saw with a straightedge guide, or measure up and have the job done professionally.
Mark up sink then use a jigsaw to make the cutout.
