● Two of the most popular types of cat litter are a clay-based product and a clumping litter. Clay for litter is obtained by potentially environmentally destructive strip-mining and may also contain crystalline silica, a lung irritant. Clumping litters often contain sodium ben- tonite, which can cause respiratory distress in cats, and harm to kittens, who ingest it after licking their fur.

● Look for 100 per cent biodegradable, non-clay organic products such as 100 per cent recycled paper, organic wheat or pelletised lucerne. If odour is a problem, sprinkle the litter with bicarbonate of soda.
