Applying depilatory cream Photo: Thinkstock

● Most depilatory creams and lotions contain an array of chemicals, including irritants and allergens, as well as alkaline, corrosive substances such as sodium thioglycolate.

● Consider natural methods of hair removal – such as shaving or sugar waxing (sometimes called ‘sugar- ing’). This involves removing unwanted hair with a mixture of sugar, lemon juice, water and citric acid, so look for those ingredients when buying a sugar-waxing product. If you prefer traditional waxing, look for beeswax as an ingredient.
