Choosing a diet

It’s a tough choice choosing the right diet for your pet. Commercially prepared food is convenient but it may be expensive; home-made food is cheaper but requires some planning.

● Try to offer your pet variety, both for the sake of its health and to keep it interested. If you want to change your pet’s diet, it’s best to introduce new foods gradually.

● Observe your pet’s appearance, behaviour and general health. These are your best guides to whether you are feeding your pet a balanced and healthy diet. Seek veterinary help if you are unsure whether your pet is getting the nutrients it needs.

Food in the raw

Many experts and vets advocate feeding dogs and cats a raw food diet. There are a number of sound reasons for following this advice.

● A mixed diet of raw meat, bones and vegetables most closely approximates your pet’s genetically programmed ideal diet.

● Eating raw food is good for your pet’s oral health. It encourages stronger teeth and gums and your pet will be less likely to have bad breath.

● Raw bones are a good source of calcium. They also supply small amounts of cartilage, bone marrow and minerals that are vital for strong, healthy bones.

● A good bone provides your pet with dietary roughage.

● Cooked bones are not good for cats. They can shatter, blunt the teeth and even choke the animal. Also, cooking bones greatly reduces the availability of calcium, a vital mineral for cats.
